Deb's Corner

I just read Dan Thomasson’s column regarding how short-sighted it was for Republicans to vote against Ms. Sotomayor’s Supreme Court appointment and almost lost my
Wheaties!.

Apparently he feels her racist statements (regarding a Latina woman’s point of view) … her ruling against the Connecticut firefighters’ promotions (simply because they weren’t diverse enough) … the fact that sixty percent of her decisions reviewed by the Supreme Court were overturned … and her reputation for being “difficult” were not reason enough for them to question her ability to rule from the highest court in the land. Huh?!?!?

Well, Mr. Thomasson, I have a couple questions for you and your fellow liberal friends:

Were you as concerned about the effect a vote against a Hispanic would have on the Democrat party when President George W. Bush submitted Miguel Estrada’s name for the U.S. Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia? Remember how Daschle wanted to filibuster him?

In fact, the Democrats claimed he wasn’t “Hispanic enough”!

But the real reason they “Borked” him was because they knew the next logical step for Mr. Estrada was his nomination to the Supreme Court. And they couldn’t afford to let Republicans get the credit for putting the first Hispanic (and a Hispanic Conservative to boot!) on the bench.

But did they pay the price for it?

Hell no!!!

Did you, Mr. Thomasson, worry how it would reflect on Democrats at the time? Well, I don’t remember you or anyone else writing a column worrying about it.

In the end, Mr. Estrada simply withdrew his name and went back into private practice after spending more than two years in political limbo. How convenient for the Democrats!

If any of you still think the Democrats are the ‘party of racial tolerance and inclusion’, you need to wake up and smell the coffee.
