If you commit a traffic transgression, get ready to help pay for more bad government.
Iowa Senate bill SF 2378, or the “Justice System Budget”, includes $9.7 million worth of fine and court cost increases.
In fact, most fines will go up anywhere from 40 to a whopping 300 percent! And each fine will be charged a 35% surcharge and a $60 court cost to boot.
According to analysts, with the increased fines passed by the House, all fines included in SF 2378 go up an average of 92%, meaning Iowans will be assessed an additional $9.7 million in fines. When the surcharge and court costs are attached, Iowans will be charged an additional $13 million as a result of SF 2387.
As one Representative noted, the hardest hit will be the poor which often means they end up driving without a license.
Rather than raise penalty’s and fines in a recession to cover bad budget decisions made in the past, the Senate should consider cutting unnecessary services and curbing government waste.
Make sure you vote in November.
