Kill Iowa HSB 702

The media report HSB 702 is moving forward in this Iowa legislative session.

Like other ill-conceived legislation coming from this body where current economic considerations apparently fail to impel lawmakers to drastically cut spending, this bill will add insult to injury to Iowa’s employment climate.

Big Labor has no interest in amending the situation by reasonable means, instead resorting to extremist methods designed to feather their nests with millions of dollars which it can then use to further corrupt our elected representatives and harm our workers: the bill would force employees to financially support a union as a condition of employment. Put another way, stealing wages from workers who do not wish to join a union and paying for hare-brained causes near and dear to the hearts of union bosses, all to the detriment of every Iowa citizen.

To date Iowa’s Right to Work climate has served us well. Furthermore, studies (done by PHH Fantus, the nation’s leading business relocation firm) have shown that more than half of prospective employers automatically rule out non-Right to Work States when looking to expand or relocate.

Can any legislator reasonably argue in these tough economic times that Iowa should exclude more than half of all prospective employers from a look to what Iowa has to offer?

In dire economic times can any of us afford to turn away any employer prospect?

Or perhaps we should look to the gambling interests to bail out our faltering economy, you know, casino our way out of debt?

Additionally, this bill will have the effect of moving Iowa out of an elite group of states with Right to Work laws resulting in families having personal income growth exceeding 65% over the past decade.

Forced union states suffer in every way when workers are forced to pay exorbitant sums to union bosses who grease the palms of lawmakers who in turn pass anti-work laws designed to drive manufacturing to foreign shores – to wit, all the jobs that have fled to Mexico, China and India as a direct result of strangling government regulation and the myriad byzantine rules governing the employer/employee relationship.

If Iowa legislators desire to grow our economy out of recession they must not pass legislation designed to harm Iowa workers.

Kill HSB 702 …. and while you are at it repeal Iowa Code Chapter 20, another bad law Iowa can no longer afford. Removal of these economic shackles will ensure Iowa can return to being competitive in any market and weather any economic storm.
